Is Liposuction Right for You?

A checklist before you commit to surgery.

Liposuction is one of the most misunderstood procedures in cosmetic surgery. Partly because the name sounds simple, partly because social media shows great-looking before-and-afters that hide the parts of the story nobody talks about.

Here is the honest version.

What liposuction actually is

Liposuction is a contouring procedure. It removes localised pockets of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, and reshapes the silhouette. It is not a weight-loss tool. It is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It does not improve loose skin, and it does not change the texture of your skin.

If you have pinchable fat in specific areas and good skin elasticity, you are probably a strong candidate. If you are 20kg above your goal weight, or your main concern is loose skin after pregnancy, liposuction will not solve that and may make it worse.

The checklist

Before booking, run through this list honestly:

  • I am within about 10 to 15kg of my goal weight
  • My weight has been stable for at least six months
  • The fat I want gone is in specific pockets, not everywhere
  • My skin still has reasonable elasticity (not loose or crepey in the areas I want treated)
  • I am not planning a pregnancy in the next 12 months
  • I am doing this for myself, with realistic expectations about what one session can change
  • I am willing to wear a compression garment for several weeks
  • I understand that the result is permanent only if my weight stays stable

If you can tick all of those, you are a good candidate. If two or more are unclear, talk to a surgeon before committing.

Where liposuction works well

The areas where our network surgeons see the best results:

  • Abdomen and flanks (love handles)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Hips
  • Upper arms (in combination with arm lift if skin is loose)
  • Chin and jawline
  • Back (bra-line fat)
  • Knees

These are areas where fat is genetically stubborn and diet-resistant. Liposuction is designed exactly for them.

Where liposuction works less well

  • The whole torso if you are significantly overweight (liposuction has a safe fat-volume limit per session)
  • Loose skin, stretch marks, or significant cellulite (these need a different procedure)
  • The face without careful assessment (over-aggressive facial lipo can age you)
  • As a fix for a fast weight gain (the underlying issue will refill the area)

What a realistic result looks like

Most patients lose 2 to 5cm in circumference from the treated area, sometimes more. The change is visible in clothes and in photos, but it is rarely dramatic. The people who get the best results are usually the ones who describe their goal as “I want this bit to match the rest of me”, not “I want a totally different body”.

You will see roughly 70% of the final result at six weeks, and the rest keeps refining for up to six months. The contour you see at month three is roughly the contour you will keep, assuming stable weight.

VASER, tumescent, laser-assisted: does the technology matter?

Yes, but not as much as marketing suggests.

  • Tumescent is the standard. Most surgeons do this.
  • VASER uses ultrasound to break up fat before suction. Useful for fibrous areas like the back or for high-definition work.
  • Laser-assisted (SmartLipo) claims skin tightening benefits. The evidence is mixed.

A skilled surgeon with tumescent liposuction will give you a better result than a less skilled surgeon with the most expensive machine. Ask your surgeon which technique they use and why. If they cannot articulate a reason beyond marketing, be cautious.

The cost

Liposuction in Thailand, in a JCI-accredited hospital with a board-certified surgeon, runs about NZD 5,800 to 9,500 depending on the number of areas and the technique. Compared to NZD 12,000 to 18,000 for similar work in NZ, the math is straightforward.

Always ask whether the quote is per area or for the total procedure, and whether the anaesthetist and compression garments are included.

What to do next

If you have ticked most of the checklist above, the next step is a 30-minute call with us. We will tell you honestly whether liposuction is the right procedure for your goal, or whether you would be better served by a different one (often a mummy makeover, an arm lift, or simply more time at a stable weight).

Book a free call when you are ready. No follow-up emails unless you ask.
